Civil rights are an essential component of democracy.
They’re guarantees of equal social opportunities and
protection under the law, regardless of race, religion,
or other characteristics. They are entrenched in
Chapter IV the 1999 Constitution of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria as amended
1. Right to life: Most important right of every
Nigerian. it is the right that everyone has to
‘exist’ and no one can intentionally deprive a
person of this right either an individual or
government.
- Right to Dignity : Every Nigerian has a right not to be
subjected to torture or inhuman/degrading treatment and
should not be held in circumstances amounting to slavery or
servitude. - Right to personal liberty: This right guarantees that
individual have a right to their light and should not be deprived
unless it’s in accordance with the law. When defunded lawfully,
you have the right to remain silent until speaking to a lawyer,
right to be informed within 24hours of the ground of arrest
and be brought before a court within a reasonable time.
- Right to fair hearing: It guarantees the determination of an
individual’s civil rights and obligations a person shall be entitled to
“a fair hearing within a reasonable time by a court or other
tribunal established by the law and constituted in such manner as
to secure its independence and impartiality” - Right to privacy: The 1999 constitution
guarantees and protects ““the privacy of citizen,
their home, correspondence, telephone
conversations and telegraphic
communications” - Right to Freedom of Thought, Conscience and
Religion: It guarantees that an individual may manifest or
propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching,
practice and observance. It also guarantees an individual to
change his religion or belief. - Right to Freedom of Expression: Every Nigerian is entitled to
freedom of expression, freedom to hold opinions and to
receive and impart ideas and information without interference
and is entitled to own, establish and operate any medium for
the dissemination of information, ideas and opinions . - Right to freedom of movement: Every citizen of Nigeria is
entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in
any part of it, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from
Nigeria or refused entry or exit from it.
9.Right to own propert:y: Every
citizen of Nigeria has the right to
acquire and own immovable
property anywhere in Nigeria.
